Is it wrong for Christians to take medicine?
BlogSmith Wigglesworth, the man of God had a dreadful kidney disease. He had stones in his kidney. He would cry bitterly, “Lord! You do miracles through me and heal so many. Then why do I have to suffer like this?”
But as he got up every morning, before the pain seized him, he would repeat one Biblical verse several times, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
His son-in-law urged him to have a surgery and get the stones removed. But he refused, saying, “If these words are true, God will grant me healing through them.”
One day, all of a sudden, all the stones in his kidney disappeared from his body!
After reading this powerful story, the question of faith vs. medicine comes to mind. Where do we draw the line? Is there even a line? Should we refuse medical treatment when we’re sick and only rely on prayer, or should we pray and also take medicine?
Nowhere in the Bible do we hear of a doctor healing the sick. People typically went to a priest or died from their illness. But could that be because medicine wasn’t as advanced back then, so people sought miracle workers instead? I can’t help but wonder—if medicine had been available during the time of the woman with the issue of blood, would she have waited for years to meet Jesus for a cure, or would she have tried medicine first? I think she would’ve tried medicine, and only turned to a miracle worker when it didn’t work.
Is this right or wrong? I’m not entirely sure. One argument I tend to lean towards is that God gave us the wisdom to develop these medicines, so taking them is natural. It’s like a hungry man saying, he won't cook but will pray for God to feed him when God has given us everything we need to eat.
So my personal opinion is this:
If there’s medicine available, it's God who gave us the wisdom to discover it, I think it’s fine to take it. But if we haven’t found a cure yet, that’s when we turn to God in prayer for healing.
Just my two cents. Hope it helps.
Shalom 🙏🏾
